There is a new Adidas tennis shoe on the market in 2020 and it’s called the Adidas Stycon. This tennis shoe has gained a lot of attention in the public eyes because it’s the first laceless tennis shoe to ever be made.

Everyone knows the Barricade series were some of Adidas all-time best tennis shoes ever made. However, the Barricade series is now discontinued by Adidas.

This news has caused a lot of upset in the tennis community and everyone is now eager to know if the new Adidas Stycon would leave up to the expectation. If you are one of does people who are eager to find the answer then you have arrived at the right place.

In this post, I would analysis the different parts of the shoe and see how good this shoe is. If you are ready let’s start with the amazing design.

Design

The design and structure for the Adidas Stycon are entirely different from the usual tennis shoe.

The design doesn’t have many combinations of colours such as the Nike Air Zoom GP Turbo. Instead, it uses one or two colours for each shoe which is very good because it makes the shoe look sleek and attractive at the same time.

Upper

Now let’s take a closer look at the upper. The upper is completely different from the usually Adidas tennis shoes such as Adidas Courtjam Bounce or Adidas Adizero Ubersonic 2.

With this Adidas Stycon, however, the upper is wrap over the midsole and attaches to the outsole.

This acts as protection when players are sliding and dragging their feet on the court.

The downside with the upper is that is not very breathable. This can be a big issue for players who play very long and intense matches in hot weather.

Besides that, the upper is incredibly durable. If you are a player who plays aggressively or slides on the court often, the upper would prevent the laceless shoe from getting damage.

Lacing System

Without a doubt, the lacing system is the key difference in this tennis shoe. Not only that but it’s the first tennis shoe ever to have a laceless tennis shoe.

Most of you may be thinking, but how can you wear this shoe without laces or how can it support you effectively on the court? Let me explain to make your life easy.

When you order this shoe it comes with a little shoehorn. Obviously, it’s there to help you wear the shoe with ease.

To be honest most players would find this shoe very easy to wear without even using the shoehorn.

All you have to do is grab the two taps at the top and this would help slip your feet inside the shoe. However, if you have a wider or large foot you may need to use the shoehorn for extra support.

Surprisingly this shoe is going to provide you with excellent support and stability on the court. This is because inside of this shoe there is an elastic strap over the top that is going to lock your foot down so that you can move around the court very easily.

The caveat to this laceless shoe is how it can feel very tight and a little uncomfortable because of the poor ventilation. As a result, you would want to take it off straight after playing with it. This way your feet can get some fresh air and relax.

Heel Area

The heel area of the shoe is packed with reinforcement of mesh material. This is a great idea by Adidas because it’s designed to lock your heel in perfect position and give you a secure ride on the hardcourt surface.

If you are a hard court slider you would surely love this tennis shoe. If you ever find yourself in a difficult situation on the court, the heel area would support you and hold you firm on the ground.

Outsole

The outsole of the shoe is made of a herringbone tread pattern. This is going to provide you with excellent traction and stability on the hardcourt surface without making a lot of noises on the court.

Also, the tread pattern allows you to change your direction quickly and still maintain your balance. In addition, there is a clay version which does a great job as well.

In terms of durability, the outsole does a very good job. It may not be great like the Barricade series but it’s still worth it.

The Stycon would keep you going for a long period of time without having issues with worning out quickly.

Colour Options

Another great thing about the Adidas Stycon is how it comes in many different colour options.

They have colours such as black, blue, white and so on. It’s worth checking their colour options and see which one you like the most.

Midsole

The midsole is made of multi-layered EVA. This is going to provide you with extreme comfort, cushioning and protection when on the court. The EVA is very firm at the bottom which does a great job at absorbing all the bumps and shocks before they make their way to your feet.

As I mentioned earlier the EVA does a great job at cushioning your feet because of how it changes in density towards the top when you make every step.

This means your feet would always feel soft and comfortable throughout the match.

Lastly, with every step you take, energy is produced by flexing the sole and causing impacts with the ground. The energy created will be transferred by the reactive material into a rebound, which will give you an added spring and an extra boost.

This way the EVA rim ensures stability, keeping your foot supported and comfortable at all times.

Weight

With a weight of 15-ounce and a size of 10.5, the appearance of the shoe may give the impression that its lightweight.

However, when you put the shoe on it feels a little bulky like the Air Zoom Vapor Cage 4. This can be a disadvantage when playing high pace game because it could slow your speed down a little.

Final Thoughts!!

As this post comes to its conclusion about the Adidas Stycon, it’s pretty obvious that the shoe is fantastic with its amazing features. However, it didn’t live up to the expectation of the Barricade series.

The laceless shoe is a break-through in the would of tennis shoes and shows that tennis players could also wear shoes that don’t have laces. The design of the shoe is great and comes with awesome durability and stability.

Some of the downsides of this shoe are how it lacks breathability and it feels a little bulky on your feet. If Adidas manages to improve such areas in the shoe, it would become a powerhouse like the barricade series. If you manage to pick this shoe up then I wish you a lot of success in your future matches.
